Panda…an antibiotic factory

Pandas produce a super powerful antibiotic that kills bacteria and fungi. The substance is released by the panda’s immune system to protect them from catching infections in the wild. Researchers are trying to decode the substance’s makeup as it could be used to develop treatments against drug-resistant superbugs.

Dragonflies have some thinking abilities

Researchers in Australia have found evidence that dragonflies are capable of higher-level thought when hunting their prey. This is the first evidence that an invertebrate animal has brain cells capable of selective attention, something that has so far only been demonstrated in primates.

New discovered fish species named after Obama, Clinton..

Five new species of colourful, freshwater fish have been discovered and named, patriotically, after Obama, Clinton, Roosevelt, Carter and Gore. Having a fish named after you might be almost as good as getting a second term. The species are darters, the smallest members of the perch family, and were found in river drainages in eastern North America. This beautiful specimen is Etheostoma obama.

Beauty and Beast…Green vine snake

Green vine snake

This is the Green vine snake (Ahaetulla nasuta), a slender tree snake found in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The snake is mildly venomous, and its bite causes swelling and pain. They feed on frogs and lizards. There is a widespread myth in parts of southern India that the species uses its pointed head to blind its human victims.
