Suicide prevention from a blood test

suicidal behaviour

By identifying the bio-markers that show a heightened risk of suicide, doctors would be able to treat the condition, potentially saving the individual’s life. When the blood test is combined with clinical analysis of mental state, researchers were able to identify people with suicidal tendencies over 80% of the time.

It is important to note that this technique is still in the early stages and more extensive testing will be required before it can be used clinically.

Your DNA is flame_retardent

Italian researchers have found a new use for DNA: as a flame retardant. Coating cotton cloth with extracted DNA, the scientists found that the genetic material reduced the fabric’s flammability.

When heated, DNA’s phosphate-rich backbone produces phosphoric acid, which helps replace water in cotton fibers with a flame-retarding residue. At the same time, the bases, which contain nitrogen, produce ammonia, which inhibits combustion and interacts with the residue to form a protective shield over the cloth.

The only known fluorescent vertebrate

The proteins do not fluoresce through a chromophore like other animals. Instead, it only emits light when bound with bilirubin, which is toxic to humans in large quantities. This protein could be used to better diagnose diseases like jaundice and anemia.

What ants eat!!..is easily recognized

If you haven’t seen these yet, they’re good fun!

Mohamed Babu from India, captured these amazing pictures last year after his wife noticed that ants turned white when they drank milk.
He dissolved sugar in food colouring solutions of red, green, blue and yellow and then placed them in his garden to attract ants. Some of them even moved between the different solutions, resulting in psychedelic colour combinations.
